Trek X-Caliber 9 Hardtail MTB 2021 - Volt Green Fade Information

Season : 2021

Brand : Trek

Code : 297602020GRNVoltFade

Beeline: The X-Caliber range is the mid range hardtail MTB from Trek, designed for the weekend mountain biker which offers great performance at a great price.

This fantastic top of the range X-Caliber features a Shimano 1x12 drivetrain and a RockShox Judy Silver Solo 120mm travel fork for a lightweight hardtail to rip up the trails.

The X-Caliber frame is lighter than that on the Marlin range of mountain bikes, using Trek’s Alpha Gold Aluminium rather than the Silver featured on the Marlin range. Designed using Cross Country race inspired geometry for a fast, confident ride and features internal cable routing and provision for a dropper seatpost.

Sizes X-Small and Small come equipped with 27.5” wheels, Medium size and larger are all equipped with 29” wheels. Likewise fork travelled is different on the X-Small which features an 80mm travel fork with 100mm travel on all other models.

Trek X-Caliber models are a Unisex model; Trek’s market research has found that many female riders want the same geometry as the mens model, just in a size that fits! Therefore the X-Caliber comes in wide range of sizes, uses a unisex saddle and choice of colours.

This X-Caliber 9 is the top of the range X-Caliber, equipped with Shimano 1x12 drivetrain comprising of Shimano SLX Shifters, XT Rear Mech and a massive range 10-51 tooth cassette, with Shimano hydraulic disc brakes for reliable and powerful braking.

The RockShox Judy Silver Fork, with Solo Air Spring, 30mm stanchions and lockout provides 120mm travel (except for size X-Small which has 100mm travel).

Available in this Volt Green Fade colourway or in Nautical Navy.

The X-Caliber 9 has a listed weight of 13.32kg for size Medium, a great bike for the recreational mountain biker looking for a great value hardtail for weekend trail rides.

Trek: X-Caliber 9 is the top-end model in the X-Caliber family. It's a fully race-ready cross-country mountain bike built with parts designed to compete. A RockShox Judy Silver fork with remote lockout, a 1x12 Shimano XT/SLX drive train, and a wide-range cassette make it a great choice for fast singletrack riders who want a great bike that's ready to race straight out of the box.

It's right for you if...You measure your rides in speed and distance, and want a fast XC bike that will help you cover more trail in less time. You race, or you could see yourself getting into racing, so you want a hardtail with competition-level parts that can give you an advantage on the trail.

The tech you get: A lightweight Alpha Gold Aluminium frame with internal derailleur routing, a RockShox Judy Silver fork with 100 mm of travel and a TurnKey remote lockout, a Shimano XT/SLX 1x12 drive train and Shimano hydraulic disc brakes. Plus, Bontrager Kovee Tubeless Ready rims and internal dropper post routing make it easy to upgrade.

Why you'll love it:

  • It's a great bike for someone who's just getting into serious racing: you get high-end XC parts on an incredible frame with enough cash left over for entry fees
  • There's nothing as sweet as a silent ride: the clutch rear derailleur prevents chain slap, even in the rough
  • Front and rear Boost hub spacing opens the door for high-end wheel upgrades
  • The 31.6 mm seat tube gives you the option to install a dropper post when you want to tackle rowdier terrain
Hardtail mountain bikes refer to mountain bikes with a rigid rear end as opposed to those with suspension which are full suspension models, which weigh more and used for more extreme mountain biking.

Wheel Sizing – Where once all MTB’s used 26” wheels, there is now a combination of 27.5” / 650B wheels or 29” wheels. The 27.5/650b wheels (these are the same size, but companies refer to them differently) offer more nimble handling and accelerate quicker than the 29” wheels, but the 29er rolls faster and clears obstacles with more ease.

Beginners MTB / General Use MTB
Frame & Fork -  Entry level mountain bikes can be used for off road riding or for general riding using a light yet strong and durable aluminium frame with a suspension fork offering 100mm travel (sometimes this is 80mm on smaller frame sizes). Some models will feature a lockout on the fork, this is a lever on top of the fork that locks the fork out to behave like a rigid fork on the road.
Gearing starts with 24 gears (3x8) or 27 gears (3x9), which combine 8 or 9 speed shifting with a triple chainset.
Wheel size varies according to brand and range. Trek use Smart Wheel Sizing, which uses 27.5 wheels on the two smaller frame sizes and 29” wheels on 17.5” frame size and bigger. Specialized offer the Pitch range which uses 650B/27.5” wheels.
Braking – On the entry level models mechanical disc brakes are equipped – no longer V-Brakes – which offer improved braking, especially in wet or muddy conditions. Hydraulic disc brakes offer even greater braking power and come equipped on some bikes.

Recreational XC (Cross Country)
Frame & Fork – Still aluminium, but a lighter weight aluminium is used to reduce frame weight, and improved suspension fork; lighter with compression and rebound adjustability. Some bikes offer greater suspension travel for more playfulness, such as the Whyte 9-Series which features 130mm travel forks.
Gears – Evolve to 2x9 and 2x10 drivetrain set ups, the reduction in chainrings allows for greater pedalling efficiency with a wide cassette keeping a wide range of gears.
Wheel Size: Specialized’s Rockhopper range is 29” wheel only, Whyte offer the 8-Series in 27.5 and the 529 and 629 in 29er whilst Trek use their Smart Wheel Sizing for frame size specific wheels.

Performance / Race XC
Frames & Fork – Can either be very lightweight aluminium or carbon. Forks get lighter yet, air sprung with bolt through axles common place for greater front end stiffness.
Gears – 1x11 set ups are popular, with a wide ratio cassette offsetting the switch to a single front chainring.
Wheel Size - Most performance hardtails are 29ers as this are widely recognised as being the fastest wheel, with Trek offering Smart Wheel Sizing for frame size specific wheels.
