Trek Marlin 6 Hardtail Mountain Bike 2021 - Red Information

Season : 2021

Brand : Trek

Code : 287872021REDBLK

Beeline: The Marlin 6 Hardtail Mountain Bike is a recreational mountain bike, ideal for someone looking to do some off road riding, but can also be used as a general purpose bike for getting around on.

The Marlin frame is light yet strong and durable with internal cable routing for sleek looks and protection for the cables and features rack mounts for the ability to put a rack on there should you be commuting or going on an adventure.

Trek use their 'Smart Wheel Sizing' on the Marlin models; this aligns the wheel size with size of frame, so the smaller sizes use 27.5 inch wheels, from Medium size upwards 29 inch wheels are equipped. Likewise the two smaller sizes also feature shorter reach brake levers, to enable smaller hands to reach the brake levers, especially useful for youngsters moving onto their first adult bike.

Using the same frame as the Marlin 5, this Marlin 6 upgrades the components, with a lockout feature on the forks to save wasted energy on the tarmac when the suspension fork isn't required, and upgraded gears, moving to 8 speed shifting and two chainrings for improved shift quality and better pedalling efficiency. The hydraulic disc brakes offering powerful braking performance and the 100mm suspension fork (80mm on the XS) providing bump absorption for a smooth ride.

We generally hold this Alpine Blue colour in store in a selection of sizes, with the Slate colour available to order in.

Trek: Marlin 6 is a quality introductory cross country mountain bike with front suspension and an upgraded 2x8 drivetrain that's light, simple, and easy to use. It's built in Trek's trail heritage, but also equipped with features like mounts for a rack and kickstand that make it a great choice for daily commuters.

It's right for you if.... You're testing the waters of off-road riding, and want a real mountain bike at great value, with a wide range of gears to cover more ground on the road and trail.

The tech you get: The heart of Marlin 6 is a lightweight Alpha Silver Aluminium frame with internal routing to protect your cables and add to the bike's sleek look. It has an efficient 2x8 drivetrain, hydraulic disc brakes that feel smoother than mechanical disc brakes and a suspension fork with 100 mm of travel and a lockout feature that lets you temporarily lock the suspension for better efficiency while climbing.

The final word: Performance features like suspension lockout, stronger double-walled rims and hydraulic disc brakes. It's also equipped with rack and kickstand mounts and a wide range of gears. These design details make it a great choice if your mountain bike doubles as your commuter.

Why you'll love it:
  • The 2x drivetrain gives you all the gears you need and none you don’t
  • Smaller frame sizes (XS and S) have short-reach brake levers that make it easier and more comfortable for riders with smaller hands to brake confidently
  • It has separate brake and gear levers (a feature that's common on more expensive mountain bikes) so you can fine-tune the positioning for comfort
  • Rack and kickstand mounts make it easy to accessorise, so your mountain bike can double as a rugged commuter
  • Like every Trek, it's backed by a lifetime warranty
Hardtail mountain bikes refer to mountain bikes with a rigid rear end as opposed to those with suspension which are full suspension models, which weigh more and used for more extreme mountain biking.

Wheel Sizing – Where once all MTB’s used 26” wheels, there is now a combination of 27.5” / 650B wheels or 29” wheels. The 27.5/650b wheels (these are the same size, but companies refer to them differently) offer more nimble handling and accelerate quicker than the 29” wheels, but the 29er rolls faster and clears obstacles with more ease.

Beginners MTB / General Use MTB
Frame & Fork -  Entry level mountain bikes can be used for off road riding or for general riding using a light yet strong and durable aluminium frame with a suspension fork offering 100mm travel (sometimes this is 80mm on smaller frame sizes). Some models will feature a lockout on the fork, this is a lever on top of the fork that locks the fork out to behave like a rigid fork on the road.
Gearing starts with 24 gears (3x8) or 27 gears (3x9), which combine 8 or 9 speed shifting with a triple chainset.
Wheel size varies according to brand and range. Trek use Smart Wheel Sizing, which uses 27.5 wheels on the two smaller frame sizes and 29” wheels on 17.5” frame size and bigger. Specialized offer the Pitch range which uses 650B/27.5” wheels.
Braking – On the entry level models mechanical disc brakes are equipped – no longer V-Brakes – which offer improved braking, especially in wet or muddy conditions. Hydraulic disc brakes offer even greater braking power and come equipped on some bikes.

Recreational XC (Cross Country)
Frame & Fork – Still aluminium, but a lighter weight aluminium is used to reduce frame weight, and improved suspension fork; lighter with compression and rebound adjustability. Some bikes offer greater suspension travel for more playfulness, such as the Whyte 9-Series which features 130mm travel forks.
Gears – Evolve to 2x9 and 2x10 drivetrain set ups, the reduction in chainrings allows for greater pedalling efficiency with a wide cassette keeping a wide range of gears.
Wheel Size: Specialized’s Rockhopper range is 29” wheel only, Whyte offer the 8-Series in 27.5 and the 529 and 629 in 29er whilst Trek use their Smart Wheel Sizing for frame size specific wheels.

Performance / Race XC
Frames & Fork – Can either be very lightweight aluminium or carbon. Forks get lighter yet, air sprung with bolt through axles common place for greater front end stiffness.
Gears – 1x11 set ups are popular, with a wide ratio cassette offsetting the switch to a single front chainring.
Wheel Size - Most performance hardtails are 29ers as this are widely recognised as being the fastest wheel, with Trek offering Smart Wheel Sizing for frame size specific wheels.
