Bronze for Ben Sumner in 2013 National U23 Champs!

Beeline rider takes bronze in Cyclo Cross Champs

Beeline's Ben Sumner rode a brilliant race to take bronze in the National Under 23 Cyclo Cross Championships in Bradford on Sunday. Ben overcame an early first lap crash that left him well down the field, fighting his way back to the lead group of seven after a couple of laps.

The standard of the under 23 field was immense, with eight riders all with a strong chance of winning, and the this elite group of riders and would not be out of place in the mens elite race, as shown throughout the season in the National Trophy Series.

The lead group would stretch like elastic before all coming back together tima and again for several laps as riders each took turns at breaking one another before Ben hit the front on a tough section and blew the lead group to shreds just before a steep run up, opening up a small gap on Grant Ferguson and a bigger gap to defending champion Steve James.

Ferguson bridged across to Ben, and the two worked together and it looked as if the title would be between them, but James put in a big effort and got back on terms with the leaders.

The three all took turns at the head of affairs before Ferguson launched a vicious attack on the penultimate lap with James chasing ahead of Ben. Ferguson stretched his lead on the last lap finishing 35 seconds clear, with James coming home just seven seconds ahead of Ben, who is still young enough to compete in the Under 23's for another two years.

On the Saturday, Emily Wadsworth - the Girls Under 14 National MTB Champion - was hoping to double up with the Cross title, but crashed heavily on the opening lap before finishing fifth. There will be plenty of opportunities for Emily to add to her National title in the future!
